Did You Really Think I Wouldn't Notice?

Hmmm, how to phrase this...

Links.

If you take a gander over to the left, you'll see a bunch of really neat blogs, some interesting reading material, and my archives (if you're really a glutton for punishment).

The only link that I think is somewhat close to an advertisement is for a charity. I've got nothing against other folks posting links for profit - their blog, their rules. As for my blog well, I never say never, but not at this time...

I've been kind of freewheeling with my other links, 'cause that's what it appears to me that most other folks do - see something cool, link to 'em and write about it.

For the record, anybody out there that doesn't really want me linking to them in my posts or on my front page- no problem, drop me a line and I'll respect your wishes.

I'll comment on the occasional post - not nearly as many as I should, I know, but my blog feeder is getting out of control - so I suppose that technically, there's a link from some of my comments back to this site. What I don't do is comment on other folks' blogs with my comment consisting of nothing more than an advertisement for my little blog.

I got a comment / request recently, asking me to post a link to an on-line DVD shop. This didn't bother me much - someone asked a question, and I answered. Hell, I was somewhat flattered that someone out there thought that my stuff might actually toss them enough traffic to make a difference- but I declined.

Now, maybe I'm being a little sensitive here, long(ish)-term readers might understand the significance of the end of this month, so when I got a comment notification on a post for almost a year ago, I was most definitely not pleased to see a friggin' comment / link / advertisement.

I had comment notification.

I will now try to figure out how to do comment moderation to hopefully prevent this sort of... thing in the future.

In the event the posters of the above mentioned comments can't catch a clue if I crammed it up their rear - sideways, and sans dinner, drinks, or lube -, any of my blog savvy readers out there know how to delete undesirable comments? There's gotta be a way...

I do very much appreciate most all other mails and comments- funny, punny, questioning commiserating, hell- even the odd 'hey, dumbass...' ones.

Crap. Shouldn't there be a little trash-can icon there somewhere?

Or can I not delete my own comments...?

I've got my comments set to require moderation after 14 days. About half of comments older than that are spam.

Did you try logging in to delete your own posts?

There should be a little trash icon. Try deleting mine, I don't mind. :)

Ah, I see you've also enabled moderation. That should solve your problem.

Sweet, it asked me to publish or reject.

I was logged in, but still haven't stumbled on the method for deleting old comments...

That 'after 14 days thing', might that do it? Hmmm....

I'm not seeing the trashcans, but I'm not seeing photo icons, neither.

*sigh*

What I do is Edit Post on my dashboard.

Then I scroll down to the post where the comment is and click on the "comments" in blue near the post. This opens the post and all the comments.

Then, next to the comments is a small trash can to the lower right. I can simply delete the comments there.

Wordpress catches that sorta stuff a lot better than blogger. Anything with an ad link in it requires approval. :P

I use wordpress to run my blog and it catches all spam and I get a lot of spam. I know you probably don't wanna take the time and hassle to transfer everything to wordpress but their spam catcher is good.

This comment section is so different. After I sign in there is the "publish/reject" feature, yes, but it's odd that the little trash can icon isn't here..........sorry, Murphy, but aside from contacting Blogger Help there's nothing else I can think of suggesting.

I've got a module in my blog that automatically closes comments on posts over X number of days (I think I have it set to 30). Perhaps blogspot has such a useful feature.

Murphy, transferring everything from blogger to wordpress is easy now. They do all the work, all you have to do is sit there and look pretty. :D

This is one big reason I set my blog to moderate comments. It's the simplest thing. Only takes a few seconds in your e-mail, & it doesn't seem to dampen down commenting.

We have little trash cans!

Score!

Thanks for the help, all.

I've never come across the type of "problem" you've had...and I've been doing the blog-gig for 2+ years.

I do what Steelhammer says when editing...works for me.

And with ALL this tech here, I'm about as "puter-savvy" as a 90-day-wonder in country figuring out which end to wipe...lol!
(and to think I used to operate systems as large as an APC...with as much computing power as my damn wristwatch today)

Gotta love it!

Carry On.

I don't like comment moderation (as a commenter or as a blogger who would have to moderate), but am also not a fan of spam comments at all. I use wordpress and really like the features they have available for screening out comments. I've had a few mishaps with comments getting stuck in moderation that shouldn't, but it's caught almost 1,000 spam comments at this point. The trade-off seems worth it to me.
